Candles and fire are a traditional element of rituals.

They are often placed along with flowers, scented incense, offerings, and other spiritual items. They can be lit next to statues out of respect. They can also be used during meditation with many great benefits. There are a number of options to use at home to help enhance your practice.

The following are six of the several ways using candles can enhance your wellness practice:

1. Symbolic

A lit candle flame is symbolic of a state of Enlightenment. However, the flame can also represent impermanence. Candles are a bridge between realities – they are in the realm of form (fire), yet also in touch with the infinite(warmth), constantly renewing compassion.

When using your sleep boss candles in meditation, the simple act of lighting them can create an anchor that will help you readily enter a meditative or quiet state.

3. Reverence

A burning candle used in a meditation space can add to the feeling of reverence to your practice.

4. Quiets the “Busy Mind”

Candles create a relaxing and calming atmosphere that helps to quiet the constant flow of thoughts, emotions and to do's. We can more easily become a “watcher” of the mind as the light of a pure scented candle shines forth.

6. Reminder of Our Nature

The candle flame is symbolic of the inner light. It can serve as a continuous reminder of our reality and the ultimate destiny of each and every one of us.

So next time you want to practice meditation, remember to stock up on candles. One two or three are never enough! Create a space in your home dedicated to your practice and enjoy the flow and peace.

It’s been said that the state of Enlightenment is not represented by the blowing out of a candle; it is that the candle can finally be extinguished because the sun has arisen and daylight has come (Rabindranath Tagore).

Incorporate candles into your Buddhist practice and enjoy all of these uplifting spiritual benefits.
