Pure essential oils are the heart of The Sleep Boss. They are what you reach for at the end of a long day, the scent that tells your body the day is done. But what actually goes into a blend, and what does the research really say? This is a plain guide to our ingredients, the four blends they create, and how to use them as part of a calm evening ritual. It is educational and not medical advice. If sleep problems persist, please speak with a health professional.
What makes an essential oil 'pure'
An essential oil is a concentrated plant extract, usually captured by steam distillation or cold pressing, that holds the natural aroma compounds of a flower, leaf, resin or peel. 'Pure' means exactly that: the oil and nothing else. Every Sleep Boss blend is made from 100% pure essential oils, with no synthetic fragrance, parabens, silicones, PEGs, sulfates, mineral oils, petrolatum, colouring or animal ingredients. Our oils are vegan and cruelty-free, blended in small batches in Australia.
How aromatherapy supports a calm wind-down
Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic plant oils to support wellbeing. When you breathe a scent in, the signal travels along the olfactory nerve straight to the limbic system, the part of the brain tied to emotion and memory. That direct route is one reason a familiar aroma can shift how you feel so quickly, and why a consistent scent at bedtime becomes a learned cue that it is time to rest.
The research here is encouraging rather than a cure. A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that aromatherapy can improve sleep quality, with lavender the most studied oil of all. Separate reviews of randomised trials have linked inhaled lavender with better subjective sleep quality, though researchers call the evidence promising rather than proven. We think of our oils the way the evidence suggests: a reliable, repeatable signal to wind down, not a sedative and not a medicine.
The three ingredients with the most research behind them
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Soft, floral and herbaceous, lavender is the most researched oil in the sleep space. Reviews of randomised trials have associated inhaled lavender with better subjective sleep quality and a calmer state before bed. It is the lead note in our Sleep Blend Pure Essential Oil and Sleep Essential Oil Roller.
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)
Bright, sweet and gently uplifting. In a controlled study of students facing a stressful task, sweet orange aroma was associated with lower anxiety without heavy sedation, and an earlier study diffusing orange in a waiting room reported calmer, better mood in patients. A warm citrus note that takes the edge off. It rounds out our Sleep Blend.
Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Rich, exotic and floral. A small human study found that ylang ylang was associated with greater calmness and a more settled state. We use it for its soothing, harmonising character across our Sleep and Meditation blends.
The supporting cast
These oils are traditionally used in aromatherapy for relaxation, grounding and mood. The notes below describe their scent and how we use them, rather than any medical effect.
- Marjoram (Origanum majorana) - warm, soft and herbaceous, a comforting base note in our Sleep and Meditation blends.
- Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) - deep, woody and grounding, used across our Meditation and Mindfulness blends.
- Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) - earthy and rich, a steadying note in our Meditation and Mindfulness blends.
- Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) - resinous and meditative, long associated with stillness, in our Mindfulness blend.
- Jasmine (Jasminum sambac) - a lush, exotic floral for a sense of calm, in our Mindfulness blend.
- Pink Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) - fresh and reviving, a lift in our Mindfulness blend.
- Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) - crisp and summery, brightening our Meditation blend.
- Geranium and Rose Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) - sweet and floral, balancing notes in our Meditation and Resilience blends.
- Mandarin (Citrus reticulata) - gentle, sweet citrus, a softening note in our Resilience blend.
- Neroli and Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium) - delicate blossom and green woodiness from the bitter orange tree, grounding our Resilience blend.
- Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) - deep, smoky and rooted, an anchoring note in our Resilience blend.
- Peru Balsam (Myroxylon balsamum) - warm, vanilla-like and resinous, adding depth to our Resilience blend.
How the ingredients come together in our four blends
Every blend is built for a moment, not a symptom. Here is what each one holds and when to reach for it.

How to use pure essential oils at home
In a diffuser. Fill an ultrasonic diffuser to the line, add 3 to 5 drops of a pure blend, and run it for the last 30 to 60 minutes before bed as you dim the lights. Our Black and White Ceramic Diffusers run for up to 8 hours on a single fill.
On your skin. Our rollers come pre-diluted in a nourishing carrier oil, ready to roll onto wrists, temples or the back of the neck. Always dilute pure oils before applying them to skin, and avoid contact with the eyes.
In the bath, or with a cup of tea. A warm bath one to two hours before bed is one of the better-studied wind-down rituals. Pair our Relaxing Botanical Bath Soak with a caffeine-free cup of Herbal Sleep Tea to turn winding down into a ritual your body learns to recognise.
Pure, and refillable
Purity runs through the whole range, and so does sustainability. Our Luxury Ritual Oils come in refillable bamboo casings, bought once and topped up rather than replaced, part of a broader commitment to remove single-use plastic wherever a refill or reusable format is possible. Browse the full pure essential oil range to find your blend.
